Frequently Asked Questions
Seismic data is data that describes the motion of the Earth's surface during an earthquake. Essentially, you can think of it as a bunch of numbers in a time series, and it resembles a waveform when plotted in a graph. Seismic data is the data recorded by seismograph (or any seismic sensors) to measure the magnitude and intensity of an earthquake.
Prior knowledge about seismic data utilization is not required to join this competition. There will be Crash Course lectures at the start of the competition to introduce the seismic data to the students and teach how to manipulate the datasets needed. It will be an advantage if the participants already have an understanding of any programming language, but not a requirement to join the competition.
Utilization of the seismic data from UP Resilience Institute's public seismic network is the rationale of the competition, so it is imperative that all participants must utilize it. Teams can register to the competition without any prior knowledge; However, to proceed and win the competition, participants must learn on how to utilize the seismic data during the Crash Course lectures.
A fee of PHP 1,500.00 for each team will be required upon registration.
Yes, you may. However, your team will only be officially registered once you submit all the required documents and payments.
Yes. In this case, the student(s) must submit a written letter of endorsement signed by the school director/principal. The student(s) will need to submit their proof of enrollment as soon as it becomes available, not later than September 30, 2024. Failure to comply will automatically disqualify the student(s).
No, only full-time faculty members of the school shall be allowed to register as the team coach.
Only one team per school/institution is allowed to register and join the competition.
The registration fee is non-refundable once the registration period has ended. The team may opt to replace the members via substitution, provided that there is a valid reason behind it. Further details will be discussed in the handbook.
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Only the first 20 teams to complete their registration will be included in the official list of participants for the Quake Quest competition. In case you already paid the fee but weren’t included in the official list of participants, we will refund your registration fee.
Any research project is accepted as long as it utilizes the seismic data from UP RI's public seismic network.
Yes, Continuing Projects are allowed, provided that there is a distinct difference between the existing proposal/project and the proposed project that you are working on in this competition. Further details will be discussed in the handbook.
Major Quests refer to milestones related to the main research project competition that you will be working on. Minor Quests refer to additional activities devised to let you earn more points. Think of the Major Quests as the main mission in a video game while the Minor Quests are the side missions in a video game.
After the crash course series, you will have approximately 7 weeks to work on your project before the deadline for the Final Paper. Further details will be discussed in the handbook.
Each team will go through a series of quests that will give them points. During the Qualifying Round, the points will accumulated and tallied. The teams will be ranked based on the total points accumulated during this round, and only the Top 5 (five) teams in the rankings will proceed to the Final Round. The points will be reset and normalized based on the rankings from the previous round.

There will be a leaderboard available on our website. It will contain the total points accumulated for each team, and display the rankings of all the teams. The leaderboard will be updated regularly, after the evaluation of each quest.
Lecture materials will be available for reference. However, the points that are supposed to be attained from attending the crash course series will be null.
Each quest will be evaluated based on a set of criteria rating developed specifically for each quest. The rating will be multiplied to the maximum points attainable for that quest. For example, let's say the maximum attainable points for Project Proposal is 20 points. If your submission was given a rating of 94%, the total points computation for that quest will be 20 x 0.94 = 18.8. Deductions (if applicable) will be applied after the computation of the total points.
The Crash Course, Project Proposals, and Minor Quest submissions (i.e. memes and reels) will be evaluated by the Quake Quest Competition Development Team. On the other hand, the Final Research Paper, Poster Presentation, and Oral Presentation will be judged and graded by an external panel of judges comprising experts of different disciplines.
Pre-final round
Your research project will be licensed under Creative Commons upon submission, specifically CC BY 4.0. This license enables reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, so long as attribution is given to the creator. Further details will be discussed in the handbook.
Late submissions will NOT be accepted. Since this is a competition, we will be strict about timelines and deadlines. We will be reminding everyone about the deadlines as frequently as possible to make sure they are aware of them.
Any member of the team may do the submissions. Only one submission per team will be allowed for each deadline. Duplicate submissions from the same team will elicit a deduction from the total points for that submission. See Section 4.6.2 for more details.
The Crash Course lecture presentations will be available a week after each lecture. It will be stored in a Google Drive folder, which will be accessible for a limited time.
Each participant will receive a Certificate of Participation, regardless of the result of the competition.
